How to find your art style, and how I found my own.

I was always worried if my art style ws good enough for me, or even for everyone around me. I remember my friens always praising my art, but i was worried that they were only being nice to me, because they were my friends.

So, I set out on a journey of finding my art style. Once I stumbled upon a video on youtube which said something abut automatic drawing and I was intrigued as to what it was . But when I looked at the interview of an old man who was talking about automatic writing, he said, “even I wanted to find my art styl, so I just looked at great painters and tried to learn their style, and implement it, and slowly I started to find what I fond happiness in the most, and yaa, I found my art style, which is still a process.”

And even when writing the above parah, something struck my mind.

Once art style, is something that one likes to draw. Even if it means practicing someone else’s art in your journal, and adding your own touch.

Finding art style is a process, one needs to be patient for, and not pressurise oneself for.

So here are a few steps, on how you canfind your art style.

1. Become a natural observer.

Usually when I go out fo some walk, or just even walking in my garden or having a little picnic,or just going anywhere with people, take few minutes of silence and observe your surroundin. The nature, and how beautifully the leaves of the trees are carved and perfected.

Don’t think about your art style, or how you are going to inspire yourself from the nature. Just be.

Just do nothing, and enjoy the moment and just be in that moment, observing without the expectation of receiving some inspiration.

With practice you will become a natural observer, and you will reaise, you look in to things like no one else does.

2. Try practising automatic drawing.

If you don’t know what automatic drawing is, I will also make a detailed blog on that, but for now, I will explain you briefly as to what automatic drawing is.

Automatic drawng is a way of letting your subconscious mind take over you drawing. So basically, you just let your whole hand draw whatever it wants to draw on the paper, without judging it, or trying to make sense out of it.

It is like a way of meditating, as well as practising to coardinate with your subconscious mind.

Firstly you take a few breathes to relax, and then take a pen, nd let your whole hand draw, ad not only your wrist. Just go wiht the flow, and feel relaxed while doing it.

Note: if you notice that you don’t feel relaxed while automatic drawing, just know that it maybe because, you are trying to make sense out of the drawing.

So, the goal here is to not try to make sense out of whatever it is that your drawing. Just let your ming take over while you relax back.

3. Think of finding your art style as a process, and not a goal.

Look, goals keep on changing constantly. It is the process that makes you a good learner. Everything that comes your way during the process, is just there to teach you something.

So learn from the dissappointments that you face in the process of finding your art styel,a dn not be wounded by it.

Because if you are wounded by it, it could lead you ito a spiral of emotivation, which could also lead you to an artist block.

And you don’t want to be cuaght in a artist block, do you?

So, learn from your mistakes, and thinking of it as a journey, would help you understand your mistakes and not b disspointed by it.

4. Stand up for your self.

This is the most important, I think. Because, many a times, we ourselves become are worst critiques, which leads to two roads.

One is, you either becomes so motivated by your own self critisicm, that you start working hard, in order to prove to yourself that you are brilliant.

Nd another is, that you become very demotivated, and dump yourself into the spiral of artist block, where you are not sure, when and how this artist block is going to end.

So, in times like self-criticism, we are supposed to stand u for ourselves, and understand ourselves.

Taking some time off, or going out for a walk would help alot, to remove that temporary feeling of self-criticism,

So, the conclusion we reached is, that finding your art style is a journey, and not an end goal. You keep learning and learning, and just remember to never stop.

It is okay to take breaks in between, because a creative person always needs a break to rewire the mental ste of creativity. So take breaks, but don’t fall apart.

You always have two options in front of you, either you get wounded by it, or learn from it and become even stronger because of it.

So which one would you choose?

Have an mazing day ahead.

Stay safe, and stay healthy.
