I was walking throught the meadows, the land of the corpses, they said.
The strange man, had said, I would meet the witch here, but I had already walked a long eight hours searching fo her, with a yellow scarf that covered my eyes.
The strange man, I had met down the mountain had told me to cover my eyes and walk the trail, with a stick. Because, If I was to see her with my eyes, I would become blind.
That had sounded very cliche standing at the foot of the mountain. It had sounded like some old tale, but seeing the serious look in his eyes, I had my fear take over, and I clearly didn’t wanna stir up another trouble for myself by going blind, when I already had a lot on my plate.
Which was also the very reason, I was going to see the witch.
“Im happy, I’m happy, I’m happy, and everything is okay.” I was tired of telling everybody this, when nothing was really alright.
Although there was still love left for the people who had raised me, but they had done me enough harm to be able to put on a happy face.
I had decided to ignore it at first, but everytime, I tried to accept them again, they would again take advantage of my weakness.
At this point, I was very scared of them.
“I am only going to ask the witch to send me to a distant place.” The words slipped out of my mouth along with some huffing and puffing from climbing a slope.
I wondered, if I would reach the end of the cliff and fall off from there.
I just wanted to take a sneakpeek, that wouldn’t hurt right? I thought to myself, as I kept on walking.
“I could just take a sneak of the road ahead.” I had to make sure if there was any cliff ahead. Although the people who had met the witch in the past had never spoken about her ever again. They were only said to have visited her by other villagers, but, none of them were willing to open their doors to answer a million questions that I had in my mind.
“I don’t know what to do, does she even exist.” I spoke while tapping my stick on the ground, to make sure, there was ground ahead.
The only thing that I always wanted was someone to protect me, but nobody had ever come when there was so much of physical abuse going on in my house.
Didn’t anybody ever think it was wrong?
I know, I wasn’t much of a good person, who always liked to do things on her own, but I had cared from every inch of me for them.
It was my only thing that I could give them. I just wanted to go away.
Someplace far away, but I had no skills, nor talent of any sort. In this ragged clothing would anybody even wanna look at me.
I felt something block my stick as I wanted to remove the blind fold and look at what it was. The surface seemed smooth when touched by my hands.
It felt like it was some sort of a huge slim plate standing in the middle of the road. I felt the urge to remove my blind fold, but my ears twitched as they heard a noise from behind me.
“You can open your blind fold now.” A female voice spoke from behindme, as I slowly unfolded my scarf and looked at what was in front of me.
A mirror.
A gigantic mirror.
I saw my reflection and tried to see the reflection of the female voice that was behind me, as I saw a beautiful girl standing very close to my ear, and I didn’t even feel her breathing. I didn’t even feel her presence next to me, as I realised that she only appeared in the mirror.
“Look at yourself, and ask watever it is you want.” She wispered very close to my ear, bu I didn’t feel any air coming out of her mouth, as I kept my gaze fixated on the reflection ahead of me.
I understood, it was her way of granting wshes. So, I closed my eyes, and spoke my words out loud and clear,
“I wish to be peacefully living in a distant place with no worries of gold and comfort.”
The words seemed to have echoed as the mirror, seemed to be getting more enlarged and what I saw appeared to be somewhat like a hallway into the mirror.
“Go ahead. Step in.” I was gently pushed in. To my surprise the mirror wasn’t solid anymore, it took in my body very easily, as if it was some sort of portal.
I reached a place with a small house in the middle of the woods. Smoke escaped the chimney of the yellow house that looked like it was shining bright with the rays of the sun.
I entered the house, to my surprise, I saw the same girl I saw earlier in the mirror, carrying a pot on to the table as she looked in my direction and smiled at me.
She directed me with her eyes to sit on the table.
I sat on the table, looking around confused, I saw a small living room right across the table. It looked soo warm and full of comfort. It made me smile.
The plates were plced on the table by the girl who looked similar to my age.
She smiled at me and poured me the soup that she had made, as she spoke, “hi, I am Vera.”
“I am Blue.” I spoke to her accepting the warm bowl. I was still filled with so many questions as to how I had landed here. Was this the safe place that was given to me for my wish?
My mind was constantly asking questions, that I didn’t dare ask the girl who sat sipping her soup in front of me.
“The mirror judges the wishes of the people they keep deep in their hearts, and brings similar people close to eachother.” Vera spoke as she looked at me. I was still quiet confused, as to why the mirror, would judge the wishes. The judging part was okay, but I had seemed to get exactly what I had desired, except for the fact that this girl was here with me too.
“The mirror is the witch people talk about. Infact the whole mountain that you climbed is the witch. You are asked to put a blindfold on to block one of your very commonly used sense, so that you can focus more on your thoughts. And every step that you take, while thinking of what exactly led you to the witch, is judged by the mountain. There are many mirrors across the montains with diferent worlds, and this is the world that you chose for.” Vera spoke, now placing the bowl on the table and smiling at me.
I had understood the majority part of it, but I was still curious about what the other mirros held.
“Then why did I not come across other mirrors?” I asked forgetting to drink from my bowl.
“Because, you wanted someone to give you company and protect you. I am a shape shifter. I can protec you and be your company. Your intentions weren’t evil. If you wanted, you could have asked for your family to disappear, or taken somesort of revenge for all the physical and mental wounds they have given you. But you chose to disappear instead. Because you still loved them and wished no harm for them. And all this while, while climbing the mountain, you were thinking about your wish and how you wanted to wish for something that would not be bad for anybody. You only wanted peace. So you got led to me.” Vera finished speaking.
“So what are you? And why are you here?” I asked, beause my mind was running in different places as to what was hppening with me.
“I am what you asked for in your heart. I know it may sound crazy, but even I have wanted company for a long time. I was just like you a fifty years ago, when I had wished for something and got it. And you with a simialr vibration got matched with me, and here we are in this world.”
I understood quiet abit of what and where I was. The moment I had entered this place, I had felt warm and protected, so there was no way, there was any harm around.
“Take a nap, and I’ll show you around when you wake up.” Vera spoke, collecting the bowls and the pot, and heading over to the sink.
Whatever this place was, it definitely felt like something from a dream.
In the real world, there was Blue, standing in front of her house, with her uncle coming towards her and grabbing her by the arm and taking her in to the house. The beating noises came from within, and there was no noise made by Blue in response. The body of Blue, was already immune to the pain as she took the blows of her uncle’s wip without avoiding them. Her body collapsed on the floor after sometime, and her uncle paused for a moment and reached out to feel her breathing as Blue lay colourless on the floor, her eyes open, and she had stopped breathing.
Her uncle, scared out of his wits dropped the wip on the floor and ran outside. After sometime, Blue’s body was bring carried out of te house, with her parents crying, holding her an ot letting her go.
The dream had been painful to watch as I woke up and started crying as it was my final goodbye to that world and understood everything. There were no questions anymore and I was happy to have moved on to a place much better than the one I had left behind, and with the memory of the dream started vanishing and every fragment of that world disappered out of my mind.
